The new WGBH headquarters in Brighton has a 30×45ft. LED display visible from the eastbound Mass. Pike below. During the day they run a series of digital murals, the one pictured is "Giraffes Don’t Huff", and at night an image of the evening sky. The display is part of a $85M building on Guest St. designed by Polshek Archecture Partners. I really like that they added several smaller LED displays on 2 sides of the building that makes it seem more organically part of the structure.

Nice shot, how’d you get it? I’ve been trying to get a shot of this for over a week, but shooting while on the Pike is not easy.

Ha! Yeah, I’d tried a few times to shoot while driving on the Pike below, and it was blurry and more than a little dangerous. I took this from the bridge looking down Market Street.

I think this sign is an outrageous imposition on the community. It can be seen from miles away, even across the river in Cambridge, Watertown, and perhaps further. I’m amazed that this sort of thing passes local zoning regulations. What’s next, illuminated billboards in space?

I can see this from my house in Watertown. I was shocked when I found out it was put up by WGBH. When cities around American are taking long-overdue steps to control and reduce light pollution, it’s disappointing that WGBH would boast about a 30 x 45’ sign that emits 3 times as much light as a TV screen. Would you want this shining 24/7/365 in your neighborhood?

Regardless of the “light polution” and what-not (which seems moot since it’s black at night), I think it’s a very cool sign!

I’m sorry for the neighbors (since it gets dark around 4:30 pm these days I can see their point) but I love this mural so much; agree with you, Mike, about the smaller LED bars on either side - they really make it.

Would you like to know what it costs to have the WGBH sign up and running everyday?
